Historic Themes

Los Angeles’s citywide historic context statement provides the framework for identifying and evaluating the City’s historic resources. The document, created as part of SurveyLA, identifies important themes in the City’s history and development. It covers a broad range of architectural, social, ethnic, and cultural topics from two centuries of Los Angeles history, starting in 1780 and ending around 1980.

Funding sources for the historic context statement include the Getty Conservation Institute, California Office of Historic Preservation (Certified Local Government Grant Program), National Park Service (Underrepresented Communities Grant), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. State and federal grants primarily funded the development of the stand-alone documents on ethnic and cultural contexts.
